- Craft Beer Scene
One of the primary reasons I traveled to Tijuana was to experience Mexico’s best craft beer culture. Tijuana, in fact, is the origin of US beer made by hand. There are scores of small-batch brewers within and surrounding this line city. You could go bar hopping each evening for three consecutive days and yet not try them all before going back to work on Monday.
- Playa Tijuana
Playa Tijuana is a beautiful beach in the summer and a pleasant walk in the other seasons. I went soon after New Year’s, so the weather wasn’t ideal, but the beach is long and pleasant to walk along. It’s also THE spot for Baja-style fish tacos and other delectable seafood. There are sellers in several of the parking lots, but there are also a few fantastic restaurants to check out. Listening to real Norteo music is one of the reasons to visit the different eateries that line the Malecon, or boardwalk. This is the type of folk music found in this part of Mexico. It’s not for everyone, but I appreciated the peppy music while eating my fish tacos.
- Tijuana Cultural Center
This was a great surprise that I discovered during my trip to Tijuana. Even if you don’t like museums, the outside of this structure is worth a trip out from downtown. An Imax theater with instructional films is within the Tijuana Cultural Center. There is also a part of the museum allocated to nearby, regional, and national artists. This was the most enjoyable part. The museum also has a part dedicated to educating tourists about the turbulent past of this part of Mexico.
- Avenida Revolucion
This is Tijuana’s major boulevard and one of the best places to stroll about. The street stretches for several blocks and is with pharmacies, eating establishments, bars cafes, and taco stalls. It’s also home to the famous “zebras,” which are goats dressed to resemble zebras. This has become less common. If you find it sad, please do not take images or promote it in any way. The less often people pay for this, the faster it will vanish.
- Famous Border
Follow indications to the USA from the arch at the top of Avenida Revolucion. There are blue placards with a pedestrian on them pointing to the border and saying “USA.” You may obtain a good view of the border crossing by crossing a footbridge. It sparked my curiosity. It was fascinating to compare crossing borders in nations with far less security (Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam). I’ve also crossed the land border between Canada and the United States in several locations, but usually in a car, so it appears like a toll booth. This appeared to be different.
- Mercado Hidalgo
If this is your first trip to Mexico, you should go to a traditional Mexican market. These are covered markets that are open on the majority of weekdays. Generally, there are a few food stands nearby where you may get a fresh drink, a taco, or something more large. Mercado Hidalgo is Tijuana’s most situated market. It’s only a few blocks from the Cultural Center, so you may combine the two visits if you’re only in town for a few days.
